Shirl "SunShine"'s Story

Life I graduated from the University of Pittsburgh ('89 BS Information Science, minor in Computer Science), magna cum laude, no less (go figger!). Been working at Carnegie Mellon University for nearly 18 years (I think I was supposed to grow up somewhere along the way!). I have a Kawasaki KZ 750, will be getting a Harley... some day... after the kids are out of college no doubt.... 2 boys, 12 and 15 now, good kids, I must be doing something right... it's a full-time job not ruining your children.... I finally got my act together, and have been successful in spite of myself. I am a Network Engineer at CMU. I love Pittsburgh, except I hate the HazyHotandHumid days, makes me want to live in Canada. I can't get enough snow in the winter here either. I go to a conference in the summer and rent Harleys and put about 600 miles on each time (it's a 24 hour rental). Doing LasVegas US1, North and then back to LA later this month. I am very active in church, and have been so blessed to not only have lived this long, but to have received many blessings from my Father in Heaven. I am soooooo glad I quite trying to kill myself with my vices.... Ride on! SunShine at myway . com School Mrs. Overman was the most influential teacher I ever had, even after all the college years. She told me so much about myself that really helped me later on in life when I found solutions. My 9th grade biology class (I can't remember her name! Mrs. D<something?>) made me love biology. 8th grade: I crushed on Chip Warner. His locker was under mine. Whenever he was near, I'd drop my books on him. How classic! How painful for him! I loved that hair.... years later I saw him and it was all gone. I was heartbroken! 9th grade: Cary Crager and his Charger. He was a senior, and he'd take me for a ride. Down that driveway, hit the water at the bottom, and fishtail out onto Churchill, doing Gs. What a ride! I think he tried to scare me, but I ended up a motorhead... maybe that was his fault? :-) Nah, it was all the lemons I got at thos BuyHere-PayHere lots! Helping out in drama class was the best art of my last semester in school. Hey Joe! remember giving me my nickname SunShine? Thanks dude! I haven't seen you since I ran into you at the club when I was 19. How the hell are you? Too bad my folks didn't insist on ...Expand for more
education. And had we had more money, maybe the lure of working wouldn't have been so great. How would I do it if I could do it all over again? The same way. God has big plans for me. I am so lucky to be alive. My friends said I'd never see 19. I would say I told you so, but too many of them are dead now. :-( RIP to my CHS friends: Joe Covacos(sp?), Donna Miley, David Baines (or so I heard), Danny Jeter... and probably many more that have passed that I was not aware of. College TCJC: 1st week of college, I'm on my bike, and it rained every day! Sucks to be soaked and in air conditiong all day when you're not used to it at all! Once my bike died and I had to leave it on the side of the road cause I had a test. At least it was there when I got back! But it was a rat bike (Yamaha RZ400) CCAC: Dr. Chen. What a hoot he was teaching Reproducitve Biology. His vocabulary was crazy, 'refertinization'. Met one of my still-best friends there, Carol! Satch, you around? Pitt: Hey fellow Zets! I'm working with Chain again! Thanks for the pointer to the job at PSC, Flash! It has been a good 18 years! (ouch!) I loved studying in the Cathedral! Remmeber the computer lab in OEH? Those really old macs? And TTYs and BitNet? Workplace Underwoods was my first job. Last time I was in the building, my name was still torched onto the paneling! My boss taught me a very twisted view about how life, and jobs work. I've had lots of twisted influences in my life, but I am MUCH better now! At the same time I was a waitress at Carnations on 7th Street. That was just the beginning of many many instances of having 2 full time jobs (and even 2 part time jobs added in at one point). McDonalds was my favorite in VOCT. I openend, cooked breakfast, cooked lunch and left at 2. Lots of time to party!!!! bad girl.... Bartending was my downfall. Led to many abusive behaviors.... but I am MUCH better now! College was such a good idea! Now I have a real job! CMU for nearly 18 years. Ouch! Do I feel old! Military Boot Camp: Petty Officer Haskall: "Attention! Stick those chests out ladies! At ease. Look up there, see those nimbulus clouds? ..." She made me cry. She made me see myself. NAVSTA NORVA: Boy, did I screw up my military career! But I got out at 355 days! Too bad I was too immature to be there.
